Poetry and the visual arts: first cousins

What a poem and a photograph share at their core is image, a visual or verbal lyric that inspires, elevates and transports—to shift the observer’s perspective, whether incrementally or all at once, to ideally perceive a more expansive, inclusive and holistic reality.

The image at its best invokes deep silence, a brief succession of the rationale and logical, where the mind stops its distracting thrumming and the perceiver sees only the pure, undefined and surprising subjectivity of the object.
